Does GTA 6 have online? GTA 6 launches as a single-player game
Rockstar and Take-Two call Grand Theft Auto VI a single-player experience. No GTA 6 online mode has been announced, and GTA Online on GTA V carries on.

No online mode has been announced for Grand Theft Auto VI. The game launches Nov. 19, 2026, as a single-player experience, in the words of Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive and both console store listings. GTA Online, which runs on GTA V, carries on. Our countdown shows how long is left until launch.
Is GTA 6 single-player?
Yes. The wording is the same in every official source:
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Rockstar Newswire, June 24 | "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience" |
| Take-Two press release, June 24 | The game "features a single-player experience" |
| PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings | "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." |
| PlayStation's GTA 6 FAQ | Answers the multiplayer question with that same sentence |
| Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO, Sept. 17 | "We're launching GTA 6 as a single player experience on two major platforms" (via Inven Global) |
The store pages' feature lists point the same way. The PlayStation Store lists "1 player" and "Offline play enabled," and the Xbox Store shows a "Single player" capability.
GTA 6 does have two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. IGN's preview says you can swap between them at almost any time or play with the pair together, but the store listings still say one player. Our characters guide covers how the two work.
Is there a GTA 6 Online?
Not yet. Rockstar and Take-Two have not announced, named, dated or priced an online mode for GTA 6. "GTA Online 2" is not an official name, and predictions of an online launch in 2027 are guesses, not announcements. That includes Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, who told Bloomberg on Sept. 17 that he expects GTA 6 multiplayer next year, according to PC Gamer; he does not speak for Rockstar or Take-Two.
Nothing official says whether GTA Online characters or progress will carry over to anything in GTA 6.
The ESRB's rating doesn't settle it either. It lists no "Users Interact" notice, and some outlets have read that as proof there is no online mode at launch. That is an inference; Rockstar's own line is still that GTA 6 is a single-player experience.
Whether GTA 6 gets an online mode later, and when, is an open question. Only Rockstar or Take-Two can answer it, and neither has. Our "Is it true?" page tracks the claim.
Will GTA Online keep running after GTA 6?
Yes. At Take-Two's annual stockholder meeting on Sept. 17, Zelnick called GTA Online "a robust business" that the company will keep supporting, Inven Global reported. Take-Two's prepared remarks for its Aug. 7 quarterly results also described new GTA Online content, including the Rockstar Mission Creator. More in our story on the stockholder meeting.
Can you play GTA 6 offline?
The PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as "Offline play enabled," and the compatibility notice on the US listing reads "Offline play only." Those are store labels, not a Rockstar statement, and they can change. The listing's legal text also says certain features "may require internet connection" or a Rockstar Games account, without saying which.
You do need to go online once: the Rockstar Store FAQ says downloading the game requires an internet connection and a platform account, and that includes the Code in Box version, since the box holds a download code rather than a disc. Our pre-load and Code in Box guide has the details.
What the free GTA+ month covers
Digital pre-orders of GTA 6 come with a free month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription. Take-Two's June 24 announcement lists it as coming "alongside a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders."
The perks are for GTA Online, not GTA 6. Every GTA+ benefit Rockstar lists relates to GTA Online on GTA V and the GTA+ Games Library, and none mentions GTA 6 content.
The fine print, from the Rockstar Store FAQ and the PlayStation Store:
- On PlayStation, redeem the month by March 31, 2027.
- On Xbox, redeem it within 180 days of purchase.
- The subscription renews automatically after the free month.
For the editions and the other pre-order bonus, see our price and editions guide.
Does GTA 6 have microtransactions?
None have been announced. Zelnick told stockholders on Sept. 17 that "there's no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch," according to Inven Global. Put plainly, Take-Two is not expecting ongoing player spending in GTA 6 when it launches.
The ratings and store pages still carry purchase labels. The ESRB's M for Mature 17+ rating, first reported Oct. 1, lists "In-Game Purchases," and Rockstar's own site now shows that rating. The ESRB uses the label for anything bought with real money inside a game, which can include upgrades and subscriptions. The PlayStation Store shows "In-game purchases optional," and the Xbox Store shows "+Offers in-app purchases." None of them says what the label covers in GTA 6. What the stores do list for the game is an add-on, the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade ($20.00 on the US Xbox Store), and GTA+ renews automatically after its free month.
Do not read the labels as an announcement of microtransactions in GTA 6. Rockstar and Take-Two have not announced any. Our ratings story has the full ESRB, PEGI and Australian ratings.
