GTA 6 map: Leonida's six regions, map size and the Florida link

Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Leonida, a state with six regions Rockstar has named: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Rockstar has not published the in-game map or an official size, so every size figure below is attributed to the person or outlet that gave it.

Leonida is a state

Rockstar calls Leonida a state in its own text. The official site describes "a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida," and Rockstar's Nov. 6, 2025, Newswire post promises "the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern day Vice City." Rockstar's pages also call it "the sunniest place in America" and "the sunshine state," and its merchandise calls it "the Goodtime State."

Leonida and Florida

Rockstar's own pages never use the word Florida. The Florida link comes from Game Informer, which described Leonida as "the game's setting and Florida parody" in its Sept. 25 cover reveal, and from the Rockstar developers the magazine quoted. Michael Kane, Rockstar's VP of dynamic art, told Game Informer, "Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem that we wanted to faithfully include," as reported by IGN.

So in the game, Leonida is its own state. The Florida framing comes from Game Informer and developer interviews, not from Rockstar's official pages.

The six regions

Each region has a page in the Only in Leonida section of Rockstar's site and an official postcard. The summaries below are ours, drawn from Rockstar's descriptions, and each region links to its page in our database.

Vice City

Vice City is Leonida's glamorous, greedy big city. Rockstar names several of its neighborhoods and landmarks: the art deco hotels of Ocean Beach, the panaderias of Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and VC Port. Southside Vice City is where the Ultimate Edition's PTT Youngin$ gang compound sits.

Rockstar's pitch: "Vice City is still the sun and fun capital of America." More on Vice City.

Leonida Keys

The Keys are a laid-back tropical island chain beside dangerous waters. Jason Duval works for drug runners here, and Brian Heder, an old-school Keys drug runner with a boat yard, lets him live rent-free in return for help with shakedowns.

Rockstar's line: "Life in this tropical archipelago isn't flashy but it's easy." More on the Leonida Keys.

Grassrivers

Grassrivers is wild wetland country. Rockstar's description promises gators, predators more dangerous than gators, and strange discoveries in the mangroves.

Rockstar's line: "The untamable jewel of Leonida's crown." More on Grassrivers.

Port Gellhorn

Port Gellhorn is a faded former vacation town. The cheap motels and closed attractions are still there, and a newer, seedier economy has moved in.

Rockstar's line: "This is Leonida's forgotten coast." More on Port Gellhorn.

Ambrosia

Ambrosia is Leonida's industrial heartland, built around the Allied Crystal sugar refinery. A local biker gang runs things there.

Rockstar's line: "The battle for the health and wealth of Leonida begins here." More on Ambrosia.

Mount Kalaga

Mount Kalaga is a national landmark on Leonida's northern edge, with hunting, fishing and off-road trails, plus the backwoods eccentrics who live out there. Rockstar's site navigation calls it Mount Kalaga; its postcard and screenshots use the name Mount Kalaga National Park.

Other places Rockstar has named

Rockstar's text names more places than the six regions. It does not say which region most of them belong to, so we have not guessed.

Shore Drive is also named on the official site. Liberty City is mentioned in Lucia Caminos's bio, as the place where her family's past lies. That is backstory; Rockstar has not said Liberty City is part of the map.

GTA 6 map size: what developers have said

Rockstar has not published a size for the map. Here is what has been said, and by whom:

• Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told IGN on Aug. 27: "It's a big map, a very big map."
• Aaron Garbut, also co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Game Informer for its Sept. 29 cover story that the map is roughly twice the size of GTA V's, according to IGN and KitGuru. IGN says he stressed density and interiors, and KitGuru reports he called it the largest world Rockstar has built "by some degree." In Garbut's words: "We obsessed about every part."
• The New York Times wrote on Aug. 27 that the map is "three times as large as Red Dead Redemption 2." That is the paper's own wording, not a quote from a Rockstar developer.

Other map details: Nelson told IGN, "The streets in this game are narrower and more realistic in terms of scale." Game Informer's story, as summarized by IGN, confirms the six main regions again, says the story is designed to move you around the map, and describes ride-share fast travel, where you hop in a car with other passengers you can talk to.

Why the size figures differ

The two numbers compare Leonida to different games, and they come from different kinds of sources. The Game Informer figure is attributed to a named Rockstar lead, Garbut. The New York Times figure is the newspaper's own description. Game Informer's full story is behind a paywall on its website, so the twice-GTA-V figure here comes from IGN's and KitGuru's reports of it.

Neither is an official Rockstar figure. Until Rockstar publishes one, treat both as reported, not confirmed.

Where to see the map

Rockstar has not released the in-game map. The closest thing so far is a print: The Goodtime State: Vice City Collection, a merchandise box that is not a game edition, includes a double-sided souvenir poster with the Leonida map. It arrives Nov. 19.

Until launch, our map page lists every place Rockstar has named, region by region, with official images. We don't show fan-made maps there, because the best-known one draws partly on leaked material. From launch day, Nov. 19, the page becomes the in-game map, with collectibles and points of interest you can tick off as you find them.
