Vehicle theft

Stealing cars in GTA 6 is tiered: some parked cars need tools such as a key cloner or a Slim Jim, but you can always carjack a driver, Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told IGN.

“this car needs a key cloner. This other car will just need a Slim Jim.”

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, to IGN

Not every car is equally easy to take. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told IGN that Rockstar has put "layers of stratification" into the vehicles: some parked cars need tools you unlock later in the game, such as a key cloner or a Slim Jim, while you can always carjack any driver you see.

Your phone helps you choose a target. Nelson said a scanner on the phone shows a car's locks, alarms and trackers, along with its resale value and registration cost. IGN, reporting Game Informer's Sept. 29, 2026, cover story, names the app WAiNK and says stolen cars go to a fence.

Once police are after you, they track the vehicle you are in, Nelson told IGN, and IGN adds that switching cars can help you get away.
